Roulette Rules

Object of the Game

In order to win with the best odds, the object of the game is to predict which number the ball will land on when the roulette wheel stops spinning.

There are also other ways to win at other odds, but it is important to note that all wins in roulette, large or small, are based on where the ball lands. For example, picking which color, either red or black, the ball will land on, or choosing the winning group of numbers that the winning number will be a part of. This will be explained below.

Categories of Bets

There are two main categories of bets – inside bets and outside bets. The roulette table has a rectangular box which contains all the numbers, except zero and zero zero. Bets placed within this box are called “inside bets”, and bets placed on other types of bets are called “outside bets”, because the location where you put your chips down to make the bet are “outside” this box.

In the table below, examples are written in parentheses in the “Description & Example” column. You win if one of your chosen numbers wins. Note that some roulette wheels have only a 0 position, while others have both 0 & 00. Both possibilities are shown in the table.

Roulette Game Versions

The basic game of roulette is almost the same in all the different versions that are found. The main differences are found in the following three details.

  • The number zero
Roulette may have one zero (0), or both zero (0) and double zero (00).
  • The number order
The numbers on the roulette wheel range from zero (or zero zero) to 36. On the French roulette wheel, for example, you will find 26, 3 and 35 next to each other in that order. The American roulette wheel has the numbers placed in a different order.
  • The table
The physical table that the bets are placed on differs in the different versions. In the American version, the numbers are all along one side, and the bets are all placed on the opposite side of the felt. The croupier can deal with all the bets as they are in arm’s reach. In the French version, a stickman is required because the table is wide and bets are placed on both sides of the numbers, making them more difficult to reach. This causes play to be a bit slower in the French version.

American Roulette

- May contain a single or a double zero (37 or 38 numbers).
- Play is faster than in French roulette. Bets are collected and paid out by hand.
- Cash chips are exchanged for color chips for the duration of the game to make it easier to identify each player.

European Roulette

- Contains only a single zero.
- Sequence of numbers different to American game.
- Everything else is the same as American roulette.

French Roulette

- Contains only a single zero.
- Sequence of numbers is the same as the European version.

- Regular cash chips are used.
- Play is slower than in American roulette because bets are collected and paid out by a stickman who uses a stick to reach all parts of the table.
